On the 24th of September 2026, students from Pendle Community High School & College’s Digital Careers programme visited Lidl in Burnley to explore how information technology is used in a real workplace environment. The visit supported students in researching a business setting and observing the role that technology plays in the day-to-day running of a retail store. As part of an Information Technology Treasure Hunt, students identified and recorded a range of technologies in use, including CCTV cameras, barcode scanners, automatic doors and temperature sensors. They were particularly impressed by the variety of digital systems used to support security, stock management and customer service. The visit contributed to helping students learn about careers and labour market information, make links between classroom learning and future employment, engage with employees and experience a workplace first-hand. Overall, the visit provided a valuable insight into how technology supports modern retail operations and highlighted the wide range of digital careers available within the sector.
