The Bay Leaves Café marked an important milestone on Thursday, May 21, as it welcomed a group of visitors from Nelson Mission for one of its first “soft opening” events ahead of officially opening its doors to the public.
The visit followed a recent trip, with students from the vocational education centre having visited the Nelson Mission Café the day before. This reciprocal arrangement provided a valuable opportunity for students to experience another community café setting firsthand, exchange ideas, and gain constructive feedback to support their own development. The return visit from Nelson Mission further strengthened this collaborative relationship.
During Thursday’s event, visitors were treated to a selection of food from The Bay Leaves Café’s developing menu, alongside freshly brewed drinks, creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Guests enjoyed “a brew and a natter,” while taking the opportunity to speak with students and staff about the purpose and vision of the project.
Throughout the visit, attendees learned about the wider plans for the vocational education centre and how it aims to equip students with practical skills, confidence, and pathways into future employment. The café itself plays a central role in delivering hands-on learning experiences in hospitality and customer service.
A guided tour of the building gave visitors the chance to see the remarkable transformation achieved through recent refurbishment works. Guests commented on the scale of the improvements, which have turned the space into an inviting and functional environment for both learning and community use.
Meanwhile, outside the building, students were busy developing the garden area – building planters and carrying out general maintenance. Their work offered a live demonstration of the centre’s commitment to practical, skills-based learning.
Organisers described the event as “an exciting step forward” for the centre as it continues to prepare for full public opening. Soft launch events like this not only allow the team to test their offer but also help build meaningful partnerships within the local community.
The visit from Nelson Mission was warmly received, reinforcing a shared commitment to community engagement and mutual support.
With momentum continuing to build, the team at Bay Leaves Café is now looking ahead to its next events and, in time, the official opening. The café is set to become a welcoming hub, bringing together great food, learning opportunities, and strong community connections
